We have started our All About Reindeer Writing Unit! I LOVE this unit and so do the kids!
If you’ve been on the lookout for an “All About” unit to write – this is it!! The unit talks specifically about reindeer, so it’s perfect to use in December – but then you can use the format and templates included to write about ANY animal the rest of the year!!
This resource is great to be used during writing workshop – as a modeled lesson or as individual writing.
So now let me share a a bit more about our reindeer writing.
Today, we did Lesson 1: Fiction vs. Non-Fiction. Here’s a little about how it went…
We started by talking a little bit about Fiction/Non-Fiction (or informational text, if that’s the term you prefer). Then, we watched a Brain Pop Video called Reading Non-Fiction. It love it- it’s short and sweet and gives a lot of information in about 5 minutes.
After the video we used the Notebook File (for the Smart Board) to record some things that we know about Fiction/Non-Fiction.
Then, we discussed non-fiction text features and I showed several examples in books. My new Dinosaur book I got at the Book Fair was a HUGE hit during this time!
When were finished discussing, I gave each Table Group a pile of Fiction/Non-Fiction books and had them work together and sort the books. Then, they could look through the Non-Fiction and look for different Non-Fiction Text Features.
If you click through to purchase this All About Reindeer writing unit, you’ll receive a connection, mini lesson, and student engagement and sharing activities! Remember – these can be used while you do your all about reindeer writing, but then you can also use them over and over again as your 1st and 2nd grade classroom or homeschool students write their own project!
As an added bonus, you can use the Notebook files for this lesson on your SMARTboard!!
Lesson 1 is in the books… now onto Lesson 2 tomorrow!
