Spookley the Square Pumpkin is one of my favorite read-alouds in October! I’ve created some fun activities to go along with the book! Ive included five different activities to do with Spookley the Square Pumpkin.
Get the Spookley the Square Pumpkin unit here:
1. Retelling Anchor Chart
Of course, we first read the story aloud and discuss. Then, using a pocket chart, we use Retelling Puzzle Pieces to sequence the story using story elements: characters, setting, problem, events, and solution.
2. Retelling Events Cut/Paste
I do this whole group and we refer to our Pocket Chart as well. There are 9 main events in this story. We read them and cut/glue them in the order of the story!
3. Retelling Bookmark and “Puppets”
I just LOVE using my retelling bookmark to help students with retelling! Go and download it for free! We make puppets and then students partner up with each other to retell the story. I have the pocket chart available for them to use if needed. Retelling can be a tricky concept for young readers. This blog post on How to Retell a Story has some helpful tricks as well as my Retelling Unit.
4. Pumpkin Writing and Craft
Students will choose a shape pumpkin. They will write about the shape and color of their pumpkin. Then they will describe the traits of their pumpkin.
5. Build a Fence STEM
This is my favorite part! The farmer’s fence is now broken because of the storm that has passed. It is the job of your students to build a new fence for the farmer. Students will work together during this STEM activity to plan, build, and test out their fence.
