Is it a bird?
Is it a plane?
Is it Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny?
NO! It is the Handwriting Fairy…
You know those kids that just LOVE to write and they use their neatest handwriting and write complete sentences and AWESOME stories with great details? Well, forget about those ones for a minute… I am co-teaching with one of our first grade teachers for writing. We have grouped the five different classes by ability level in the area of writing. And guess what??? Yep! We get all of the ones that are the exact opposite of what I just described above. But, I have to tell you- I LOVE IT!
Even after Tuesday, when they all left the room and I was about to cry- my teaching partner had to lift me up a little- she said- “It will be OKAY.” I think I may have said something to effect of “Are you crazy, did you see how they wrote today?”
After my meltdown, it did get better… we have a LONG way to go but I just keep reminding myself that it will be OKAY:)
So, the reason for this blog post… I needed some sort of motivation for these students that are the exact opposite of the kiddos I described above. I found a great resource on TpT. I do not know the teacher that created this resource and she has no idea I am writing this post. (I will have to find a way to let her know when I’m finished). If I ever happen to meet her, I may just need to give her a big hug!
Her name is Khrys Bosland and I was checking out her TpT store and she is also a blogger. Her blog is Keepin’ it Kool in Kinderland. She is actually doing a pretty awesome giveaway right now too- (I will add more about that later).
OK… so, we needed some motivation… I found her resource called The Handwriting Fairy.
The Handwriting Fairy’s name is Twinkle and she has been visiting our classroom. First, I just happened to find a box in classroom one morning- it looked like this…
As you can see, Twinkle told us to NOT open the box until writing time… so we didn’t. You will never believe what that Fairy made me do! Inside the box was a tiara, fairy wings, and a wand. She made me put them on as I described what Twinkle wanted them to do.
(Looks like a finger got in the way of the picture but I wanted you to see my beautiful wings.)
Twinkle left us a read aloud book that talks about all of the important jobs the kids need to do to have great handwriting.
Twinkle has been visiting our classroom and leaving “treats” (starburst) to students who are using their very neatest handwriting. In this packet of materials, there are little notes that can be left for students who are writing neatly.
In this packet there are also 5 different Tidy Tips to help them with their handwriting. Twinkle put each of these tips into an envelope and told us to open up a new tip each day.
So, that’s it! The kids have been so excited about writing everyday. They have been taking their time and doing their best! If you need a motivator in your class- I suggest you hire Twinkle!
We have also been using my Handwriting Charts to help us well. You can click on the picture below to grab this freebie!
